Welcome to www.whykidscantread.com, a website designed for all who are interested in helping all children learn to read. This website complements our book, Why Kids Can't Read: Challenging the Status Quo in Education, which offers insight and solutions to parents and caregivers who are struggling to ensure their children master strong reading skills, which are the fundamental building block of all learning. If your child is facing reading difficulties, you are not alone. Nearly 40% of all U.S. fourth graders cannot read at grade level, and this number rises to 60% of children from poor families. After third grade, when children must use reading as a tool to learn other subject matter, these students find themselves slipping further behind, which leads to a cycle of frustration and failure. As a result, many give up on school long before they have the opportunity to reach their potential. Yet there is a significant amount of evidence that research-based instruction built around proven practices could put most of these students back on the track to success. As a researcher who worked to establish the research basis for effective reading instruction, and a marketing and communications executive who works to engage the public in important social issues, we have joined forces because we feel that families are key to putting these proven practices for effective instruction into every classroom in America. Yet we know that it won't be easy to bring about long-term change. Our book and this website are therefore designed to fill three objectives: First, to describe these proven methods of teaching reading in plain English; second, to share successes of other parents and educators who have made needed changes in schools; and third, to give everyday parents and families the tools to follow their lead. As you read through the book and the website, we encourage you to share your own experiences with us and others as well. Please visit our calendar for conferences you may want to attend, and review our list of resources for helpful books and articles to read. Please add those you've found helpful and want to pass along. And join the people who have changed their schools and their children's lives in Why Kids Can't Read and share your own stories about helping children learn to read. With best regards, Phyllis and Reid |
